Wave grapplers edge past Swamp Foxes

Wednesday’s 113-pound bout between Summerville’s Justin Connelly and Ashley Ridge’s T.Y. Jamieson wasn’t decided until the closing seconds.

The Green Wave wrestling team was on a roll, but found itself in an up-hill battle at Ashley Ridge Wednesday.
Summerville followed a first-place effort at the Cane Bay Duals earlier this month with another championship performance, winning the MPCU Holiday Classic at Lugoff-Elgin High Dec. 21-22. Then the team placed second in a large field at the USMC Seahawk Slam in Hilton Head last week.
However, the Wave had to fight to win its first region match of the season. Ashley Ridge held a 24-15 lead with only five weight classes remaining, but Summerville rallied to earn a 39-24 victory.
“We came out flat tonight and not wrestling well and it almost cost us,” Summerville coach Daryl Tucker said. “Last month I thought we had turned a corner but it looks like we still have some things to fix. Not to take anything away from Ashley Ridge, they are a well-coached team and they fought hard tonight.”
After the Swamp Foxes took their biggest lead of the evening, Summerville began a rally in the 220-pound division with a pin by Julian Gibbs. Trey Privette won the heavyweight division by pinfall and then the Wave pulled ahead by nine points with a forfeit received by James Sass.
Ashley Ridge tried to keep things interesting as T.Y. Jamieson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period of the 113-pound bout. However, Summerville’s Justin Connelly battled and earned a 10-9 decision on a near fall in the closing seconds of the final period. The near fall was so close to the period’s end that the official didn’t signal for the points to be awarded until after the buzzer had sounded.
With only one bout remaining, that clinched the team victory for Summerville.
Other wrestlers earning a win by pinfall were Summerville’s Gavin Perkins (126) and Chad Wood (152) and Ashley Ridge’s Chris Hudgens (145) and Zach Armstrong (170).
At the MPCU Holiday Classic, Sass won the 106-pound class. Tyler Fachko (120), Perkins (126), Chad Wood (152) and David Pringle (220) placed second in their division.
Sass also won at 106 at the Seahawk Slam while Perkins finished as the runner-up at 126 and Anthony Collins was the runner-up at 160.
For the Swamp Foxes, Armstrong brought home a division title for the 170-pound class of the MPCU Holiday Classic.
