The Summerville girls’ basketball team fell to an explosive team Thursday during the Bojangles Carolina Invitational.
The tournament features 48 teams but Summerville faced a familiar foe in the first round as it lost 78-51 to Northwood Academy.
The game started out well enough for the Lady Green Wave, which took a 14-13 lead into the second period. But the Lady Chargers battled to tie the game at 18 and then closed out the period with a 16-2 run for a 34-20 halftime lead.
Summerville cut into the lead a bit, but then fell behind again as the Lady Chargers took a 53-37 advantage into the final period.
Northwood made 16 of 23 free throws in the game and hit seven three-point shots. Summerville was only 5 of 13 at the free-throw line and only managed three 3s.
As usual, Amber Campbell led the Lady Chargers. She scored 16 of her game-high 43 points at the free-throw line. Point guard Katelyn Powell chipped in 15 points for Northwood. She, Jaime Andrews and Caliyah Kappel all had a pair of three-point buckets in the game.
Summerville was led by Kwanza Murray, who scored 23 points with a variety of shots. Zuri Green and Ashley Green both finished with 12 points.
The Lady Green Wave’s 3s came from Rodnesha Capers, Murray and Ashley Green.
The tournament continued Friday after press time.
