The Ashley Ridge boys’ basketball team banked a weighty win Tuesday.
The Swamp Foxes earned a 70-56 victory over Wando at The Ridge to improve to 6-2 on the season. Wando dropped to 8-4 with the non-region loss.
“Any time you come away with a win over a program as disciplined and well coached as Wando that’s a big win,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “Our guys did a great job of playing tough all night an played our way – loose, free, fast and aggressive. It was a good team win with so many people giving big contributions to help make it happen. I think this group’s biggest strength is the way they play for each other.”
In his first game returning to the team after a week of Shrine Bowl activities, senior Romelo Doctor led the Swamp Fox charge by scoring a game-high 25 points. Fellow senior Fred Weeks added 15 points to the Ashley Ridge cause and five other members of the team got in on the scoring.
Wando was led by Taylor Magenski, who finished with 10 points. Richie Alston added nine points for the Warriors.
Welch said he is hoping the victory is something the Swamp Foxes can build on.
“When a group plays as hard as they can as smart as they can every single second for one another you have a chance to win every night,” he said. “I’m proud of my guys and now we just have to make sure we are getting better each day as we approach Christmas and our region schedule. Hopefully we will be playing our best basketball at the end of the year.”
The Ashley Ridge girls’ got off to a slow start and fell 38-26 to Wando. The Lady Swamp Foxes dropped to 6-2 on the season while the Lady Warriors improved to 6-2.
Wando outscored Ashley Ridge 10-2 in both the first and third periods. The other two periods were tight and the Lady Swamp Foxes even bested Wando 10-8 in the fourth but the damage was done.
Ashley Ridge’s Shelby Daly led all scorers with 13 points. Kearsten Duvernay led Wando with 12.
Wando will host the Ashley Ridge teams for rematches Jan. 4. On Jan. 8, Ashley Ridge opens region play when it hosts Bluffton.
