The Ashley Ridge boys fell 60-49 at home to Stratford Friday.
“We hit some shots down the stretch,” Stratford coach Troy Johnson said. “The biggest thing was we set a good pace on offense and that allowed us to get the shots we wanted. I think we beat a very good, well-coached ball team tonight.”
The Knights (6-3) opened the game with a pair of baskets from Vernon Lowndes for the lead. The Swamp Foxes (5-2) pulled within a point with a shot and a free throw from Mikey Goodwine, but that was as close to the lead as they would get.
Stratford’s Demetre Rivers and Ashley Ridge’s Fred Weeks exchanged three-point baskets for a 12-8 score, but then the Knights had three pointers from Lowndes and TeAndre Hansley as they pulled out to a 22-10 lead at the end of the first period. Weeks hit three shots from behind the arc in the game while Rivers finished with a pair of three-point baskets.
Ashley Ridge got a layup from Goodwine to take the score to 31-28, but in the closing seconds of the first half Rivers drove to the hoop for a 33-28 Stratford lead entering the third period.
The second half belonged to the Knights, who outscored the Foxes 15-10 in the third to take a 10-point lead into the final period.
Ashley Ridge pulled within six points with 1:55 remaining, but then Stratford limited the Foxes to a single bucket by Sean White while they made seven free throws to clinch the win.
Rivers led all scorers with 22 points while Lowndes added 19 for the Knights.
Weeks led Ashley Ridge with 17 points while Goodwine chipped in 11.
This week marks the return of Ashley Ridge starter Romelo Doctor, who missed Friday’s game because he was a participant in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star football game. The Foxes hosted Wando Tuesday after press time and travel to Hanahan Dec. 19 for a rematch.
In the first contest with the Hawks, Ashley Ridge earned a 70-58 victory at home Dec. 12. Tray Jenkins led the team that night with 24 points while Malik Graham added 19 points.
