Shelby Daly puts up a shot.

The Lady Swamp Foxes rode a strong defensive performance to a 34-21 victory over Stratford Friday.
“I was really pleased with our effort and energy,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “The girls got off to a bit of a slow start offensively but really played some solid defense, including holding Stratford scoreless in the second quarter. We were able to go on a couple little runs in the middle quarters to eventually pull away and get the victory.”
In addition to the second-period shutout, Ashley Ridge limited Stratford to five points in the first period and four in the third.
Ariel Glover and Brenna Swartz made early buckets for Ashley Ridge and then Shelby Daly hit a three-pointer to give the Swamp Foxes a 7-2 lead. Stratford answered with a jumper and a free throw and was looking to tie the game but Ashley Tierney blocked a Knights’ shot to secure a 7-5 Ashley Ridge lead at the end of the first period.
In the second period, Glover had a pair of baskets and Olivia Baum had an old fashioned three-point play. Meanwhile the Swamp Foxes didn’t yield a single point and Ashley Ridge took a 15-5 lead into the half.
The Swamp Fox defense continued to control the game and Ashley Ridge pushed the ball up court to take a 23-9 lead into the final period.
Ashley Ridge opened the fourth with and pair of free throws from Swartz and increased its lead to 31-9 with shots from Glover, Tamara Richardson and Samara Richardson. The Knights then went on a 12-1 run that featured two three-point shots from McKenzie Yon, but Stratford ran out of time before it could cut into the lead further.
Ashley Ridge improved to 5-2 on the season with the win while Stratford fell to 2-4.
Glover led the Swamp Fox scorers with eight points while Yon led Stratford with eight.
Ashley Ridge hosted Wando Tuesday after press time and travels to Hanahan Dec. 19 for a rematch. In the first game, Daly scored 15 points and Baum 12 but Ashley Ridge fell 44-36 to the Lady Hawks.
