Slawson takes over as Lady Patriot coach

Randall Slawson is optimistic about his debut season as the head coach for the Fort Dorchester girls’ basketball program.
The varsity team is off to a slow start, but Slawson isn’t concerned.
“We just have to keep fighting,” he said. “I’m emphasizing defense more than this team is used to and that is what we are working on. Once our defense comes around we will be a force to be reckoned with. I think we can make some noise in our region.”
He is hoping his team will jell by the time region play begins.
“We are going through a learning process,” he said. “The players have to learn what I want and my system and I am still learning what they can do, but they have given me a lot of effort. Once everyone learns their role things should come together.”
The Lady Patriots have 11 seniors on this year’s team, but they have varying amounts of varsity experience. A few players have emerged as leaders and Slawson sees great potential in others.
“Erika Martin is doing well in the middle and Shamari Jones is doing a good job running point,” he said. “Some of the scores don’t indicate how well things are developing, but I think we will be ok. Kristen Burgess is a great athlete who can really help us out, especially on defense, but she was injured our second game. When she comes back it will make a difference.”
Other members of the team include Jazzma Cheeks, Briana Chisolm, Erika Cobb, Ashlee Compton, Desiree Evans, Lauren Inabine-Mitchell, Territta Jones, Olivia Mack, Leah Robinson, London Sharper, Amyah Taylor and Taigea Griffen-Pringle.
Martin is a sophomore but all the others are upperclassmen. Slawson has also worked with the Patriot JV team a lot and he says there are some younger players he is considering pulling up to the varsity.
“I’m excited about some of our younger players,” Slawson said. “Our future looks bright.”
