The Green Wave wrestling team opened its duals season Monday with a 33-18 win over Wando.
“I’m pleased with the win,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “Wando is a well-coached team and they gave us some good matches tonight. We have some guys banged up a little so it was nice to see some of our younger guys come through against a team like this.”
Four regulars were out of the Green Wave lineup for the match.
Only two grapplers managed to pin their opponent during the match. Trey Privette won the heavyweight division with a pin in the first period and Kyle Sullivan won the 170-pound division with a pin in the second period.
Summerville’s Daniel Smith won by major decision in the 145-pound class while Chad Wood earned a major decision at 152 and Gavin Perkins earned a major decision at 132.
Some of the individual matches were especially tight. Wando’s Darren Scott battled James Sass to a 9-9 tie at 106 before falling to the Summerville grappler in overtime on a take down. Summerville’s Tyler Fachko fell 4-3 to Dakota Dahabi at 120. Wando also won tight matches at 138, 160 and 195.
Summerville’s Austin Walters earned a 5-0 decision at 182. Julian Gibbs earned points for the Green Wave with a 7-1 decision at 220.
Summerville hosts Cane Bay at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 and will participate in the Cane Bay Duals Dec. 15.
