Green Wave boys weather Bobcat rally
The Green Wave boys held off a late Bluffton rally Tuesday to remain undefeated in Region 8-AAAA.
The Bobcats fought until the very end, but Summerville earned a 47-38 victory at home to improve to 13-4 on the season.
“We turned the ball over too many times against a zone defense and two of our starters didn’t score at all in the second half,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “Fortunately, John Jenkins and Christian Kalacanic made some huge shots for us in the fourth period. We have lost something in our intensity the last two games. We are winning, just not playing well. But we are happy to be 3-0 in our region.”
Jenkins finished with a game-high 16 points and Kalacanic finished with 13. Senior Brandon Wilkerson added 10 points but got into foul trouble early in the third period and ended up fouling out early in the fourth.
Demetrious Smalls led Bluffton with nine points.
The teams battled to an eight-all tie in the first period. In the second, Wilkerson scored eight straight points for Summerville as the Wave pulled out to a 16-10 lead. Jenkins and Kalacanic then got in on the scoring and Summerville entered the third period with a 22-14 advantage.
With key shots from C.J. Frazier and Jay Middleton, the Bobcats cut the lead in half. However, early in the final period Kalacanic followed a plus-one play with two more free throws to give the Wave some cushion.
Bluffton played high-pressure defense the rest of the way and had some big baskets from Chance Murphy and Smalls, but Summerville was able to secure the victory with free throws down the stretch from Jenkins and Chris McKinnon.
On Friday, Summerville travels to Ashley Ridge. The Wave will wrap up the first half of its region schedule when it hosts Fort Dorchester Jan. 22. Both games are scheduled for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
