With their backs against the wall, the Lady Swamp Foxes fought to earn a key region win.
The Ashley Ridge girls earned a 28-27 win Friday over Fort Dorchester, but the victory didn't come easy.
The Lady Patriots jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first period and opened the second period with a three-point shot by London Sharper for a seven-point advantage. However, Ashley Ridge then went on a 9-2 run with the help of a 3 by Shelby Daly to tie the game. The Lady Swamp Foxes carried a 17-15 lead into the half, but the Fort outscored Ashley Ridge 9-3 in the third to take a four-point lead. The Lady Swamp Foxes were running out of time in the defensive battle but managed to claim the 28-27 advantage late in the period with some key free throws from Olivia Baum, Brenna Swartz and Ashley Tierney.
The Fort had an opportunity to play for the game's final shot but Swartz made a block with 20 seconds remaining and Ashley Ridge gained possession. Fort Dorchester's Erika Martin nearly forced a turnover a few seconds later, but the Lady Swamp Foxes managed to keep the ball and run out the clock.
Swartz, Tierney and Ariel Glover all finished with six points for Ashley Ridge while Erika Cobb and Sharper both had seven for Fort Dorchester.
The Lady Swamp Foxes improved to 7-5 on the season with a 2-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA with the win. On Saturday, Ashley Ridge hosts Summerville in another key region game.
