Wrestlers claim Carolina Invitational championships
Several athletes from the Summerville area placed at the 2013 Carolina Invitational Junior Varsity/Middle School wrestling tournament held Jan. 19 at Lexington High School.
The event is the closest thing there is to a state wrestling championships for the JV and middle school levels. Wrestlers qualify for the invitational with top performances at several qualifying tournaments held throughout the state throughout the wrestling season.
This year 16 local grapplers placed at the invitational, including eight who won their division.
Three members of the Fort Dorchester JV team won their division: AJ Alford (145-pound class), Asa Gaillard (182) and Quandre Chisolm (195).
Two members of the Ashley Ridge JV team won their division: Ashton Hughes (138) and Maurice Phillips (152).
Four members of the Summerville JV team placed. Koree Morgan won the 160-pound division while Cameron Sanpedro placed second at 138, Billy Hunter placed third at 120 and Devin Kicklighter placed third at 285.
Cane Bay had two wrestlers place in the middle school tournament. Jacob D’Ambrosio won the 92-pound class and Nick Harper placed third in the 285-pound class.
Local wrestlers also placed in the Girls’ Division, which was added by the South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association just last year. While the tournament offers 14 JV weight classes and 17 middle school weight classes, the Girls’ Division is divided into only four subdivisions/brackets.
Summerville’s Arykah Moore was the Bracket C champion for the girls.
In Bracket B, Ashley Ridge wrestler Nina Goode placed third and Alston Middle School grappler Amanda Mills placed fourth. In Bracket D, Rollings Middle School wrestler Hayley Jeffers place second while her teammate, Aryn Moore, placed third.
