Like a good neighbor…OLD FORT is there! That was the case back in January 2006 when the Dorchester County Council called upon Old Fort Fire Department requesting our assistance to provide fire protection services to the Givhans Community. Fire Chief Ed Genthert, who had only stepped into the Fire Chief position six months earlier, didn’t hesitate to accept the challenge. The Old Fort Board of Directors called an emergency meeting and the Old Fort Fire Department – Station Six (Givhans Community) emerged! This was a welcomed reformation, as the previous fire protection service was provided through an all volunteer fire department. Old Fort came on board providing 24 hour coverage for the Givhans community – all 45 square miles of it!
In August 2012, Dorchester County chose not to renew the (Givhans) contract with Old Fort Fire Department. Dorchester County, having recently implemented its own county wide fire protection service, will include the Givhans tax districts within its own service effective February 1, 2013. This does not affect any other tax district to which Old Fort provides fire protection services.
Dorchester County offered the following statement regarding the transfer of service: ‘As of Feb. 1 Dorchester County Fire Rescue in combination with the countywide services will be providing fire protection services to the Givhans Fire District and its citizens which are presently being serviced by Old Fort Fire Department. The Citizens of the Givhans Fire District will receive the same service as previously provided by Old Fort Fire Department. Dorchester County appreciates and commends the hard work and dedication by Old Fort Fire Department and we look forward to working with Old Fort Fire Department in the upcoming year.
The Old Fort Fire Department’s creation began on May 14, 1971.
We are proud to be a part of the Dorchester County public safety services. We appreciate that Dorchester County Council has the respect for and confidence in Old Fort Fire Department, giving us the opportunity to serve the Givhans community. We strive to continuously provide effective and efficient service for our Fire Districts. We maintain much pride, integrity, and character, both in our personnel and our public service.
Old Fort Fire Department, along with its Board of Directors, desires to express our sincerest gratitude to the citizens of Givhans for allowing us to be a part of your community. It was certainly our pleasure. The past seven years have been very rewarding to us, as we hope it has been a comfort to all of you.
Audrey Holzhausen, Administrator Givhans Fire District
