The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a Ridgeville man as a homicide.
According to a DCSO incident report, officers responded to a call at a residence at 374 Ridge Road around 11:15 p.m. Friday in reference to a man shot. Officers spoke to the complainant, who said he had found his wife's father in the back yard shot in the back of the head.
Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet identified the victim as 64-year-old Jimmy C. Edwards of Ridgeville. An autopsy confirmed that Edwards had been shot three times in the back of the head, and the manner of death is homicide, Nisbet said.
Officers spoke to the complainant, his wife, and another witness at the home. The complainant told officers he and his wife were watching television and the third person was in the house taking a shower when he heard what he thought were two firecrackers popping. He said he went outside a few minutes later with a flashlight and saw the victim lying face down in the back yard. The complainant said the victim had numerous medical conditions and was known to fall down on occasionally so he yelled to the victim. When the victim did not answer him, the complainant walked over and found that he was not moving and was bleeding, and yelled for his wife to call 911.
The investigation continues.
