The Miss Summerville High School Scholarship Pageant proudly presented this year’s pageant, “Mundo Fiesta,” on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Summerville High School auditorium. Twenty-nine beautiful ladies competed for the titles of Miss Freshman, Miss Sophomore, Miss Junior, Miss Senior, and Miss Summerville High School 2013, and each class of contestants represented a different country in order to fully incorporate the “world party” theme. The Miss Freshman contestants represented China, the Miss Sophomore contestants represented Mexico, the Miss Junior contestants represented Venezuela, the Miss Senior contestants represented Brazil, and the Miss SHS contestants represented India.
The pageant began with the opening number that featured all of the contestants as well as the winners of the past year. The contestants danced to music that represented their countries, and they also completed dances that were choreographed to include dance moves from each of their countries. After the opening number was completed, the onstage question portion of the competition was completed by the Miss SHS contestants, and then it was time for a new portion of the competition that was added this year: fitness. All contestants competed in this portion of the competition. Following fitness was the talent portion of the competition; only the Miss SHS contestants competed in this portion of the competition. Once the talent portion of the competition was completed, it was time for the final portion of the competition: formalwear. All contestants competed in this portion of the competition.
Everyone had a great time throughout the evening as the contestants competed to different songs from around the world, and the special entertainment portions of the pageant by Chris Berry and Olivia Juretitch were nothing less than spectacular. Summerville High School students are truly talented.

Two new traditions were begun this year, and one of them involves a mentoring piece. In the Miss America Pageant circuit, each contestant is expected to have at least one young lady or young man to mentor during her year of reign. Because of this, each contestant of this year’s pageant was asked to choose a young lady to mentor during her year of reign. At the end of the night when the class title winners’ names were called, each young lady who was chosen by the queens was asked to come onstage to be crowned. Five SHS Princesses were crowned this year: Courtney Wilson, Miss Freshman’s Princess; Trinity Simmone, Miss Sophomore’s Princess; Olivia Trevillyan, Miss Junior’s Princess; Abby Kwitkin, Miss Senior’s Princess; and Kylie Roberts, Miss SHS’s Princess.
The prize packages for the winners of this year’s pageant were phenomenal. Each winner received an engraved glass diamond, but the class title winners and their princesses received the following additional prizes:
SHS Princesses received the following: crown, banner, and a crown pin.
Miss Freshman, Miss Sophomore, Miss Junior, and Miss Senior 2013 received flowers, a crown, a crown pin, a crown jewelry bag, a banner, an engraved glass diamond, an embroidered pillowcase from Deb’s Cats N Quilts located in Franklin, North Carolina, an engraved glass jewelry box from Fancy Trimmins, a gift certificate for a free hooded sweatshirt from the SHS PTSA, a two hour trail ride from Graymour Stables, a $50.00 gift certificate from Southern Belle Epoque, a $100.00 gift certificate from The Prima Ballerina, and a beautiful glass bracelet from Marigolds.
Miss Summerville High School 2013 received all of the items listed above as well as a crown charm, a gift card to Firewater Grille, and a $1,000.00 scholarship.
The Mistress of Ceremonies this year was Ashlyn Staples, Miss Summerville High School 2011. The judges were Joyce Rea, the director of the Miss Charleston Southern University Pageant, Sophie Labelle, Miss Charleston Southern University 2013, and Randall Dukes, a former field director for the Miss South Carolina Pageant. The auditor of the evening was Gary Loadholt, and the escorts for the eveningwear portion of the competition were ROTC Cadets: Eric Cheung, Kaelan Feagin, Cameron Kunce, Ronald Rountree, and Richard Winter. The pageant director and choreographer for the Miss Summerville High School Scholarship Pageant is Tarrah Meyer.
The title winners of the pageant and the director are very excited about this upcoming year. Each class title winner has already completed at least three hours of community service, and the winners have also made an appearance at the Miss Summerville/Miss Charleston Pageant.
