The Green Wave wrestling team advanced to the championship round of the Lower State Duals playoffs with a 41-24 win Monday over White Knoll.
Summerville (20-2) travels to Columbia to face Lexington (26-2) in the Lower State title match Wednesday evening. The Wildcats are ranked second in the Class AAAA coaches poll released Jan. 30 while the Wave is ranked fourth. Both teams won their region.
“Lexington is a quality opponent,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “They have been ranked either first or second in the state all season and we lost to them earlier this season. We have improved since then, but they probably have too so it should be interesting.”
Summerville has put in a strong playoff performance so far. In addition to the win over the Timberwolves, the Wave defeated Sumter 71-6 in the opening round Saturday and Dutch Fork 45-18 Saturday in the second round.
Against Sumter Summerville earned bonus points in nine out of 14 weight classes. Against Dutch Fork the Wave earned bonus points in seven classes. Summerville earned bonus points in five classes in the match with White Knoll.
“Things went kind of according to plan,” Tucker said. “We felt good going into the first round. We didn’t know much about Dutch Fork except they have some quality kids so we handled that well. White Knoll is a scary bunch and they are well coached so we are fortunate to get out of here with a win and be one step closer to where we want to be.”
James Sass, Gavin Perkins, Chad Wood, Justin Connelly, Austin Walters and Tyler Fachko have all won three straight individual playoff matches.
Sass won two by pinfall and one by major decision. Connelly won one by pin, one by technical fall and one by major decision. Perkins won two by pin. Wood won one by pin and one by technical fall. Fachko won one by tech fall and one by major decision.
Robert English, Trey Privette, Julian Gibbs and Daniel Smith also all picked up a win by pin during the run.
The Fort Dorchester wrestling team defeated Stratford in the first round of the playoffs, but fell to Lexington in the second round.
The Ashley Ridge wrestling team defeated Wando in the first round, but fell to White Knoll in the second round.
