For a small school the St. John’s Christian Academy Cavaliers are making a lot of noise this basketball season.
The smallest school in northern Berkeley County advanced to its region championship game Tuesday night with big wins in the SCISA Region 1A tournament this past weekend at Cathedral Academy.
The Cavaliers blew out Ridge Christian 94-23 on Friday as six players scored in double figures to nail down the team’s 20th win of the season. SJCA downed Coastal Christian Prep 73-45 on Saturday to improve to 21-5 on the year.
Mike Lewis poured in 24 points, Damian Hurta 20 points, and Jalen Ward recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers into Tuesday night’s championship game against Faith Christian.
St. John’s Coach Bob Winters said the wins were a total team effort.
“Saturday night we overcame some adversity early,” he said. “Greg Gamble drew his second personal in the first quarter and sat out most of the first half, but Dan Glover came in for him and played very well, grabbing eight rebounds, scoring seven points and securing several loose balls.”
Winters said that Ward lost a contact during the first half that was never found and sat out for a while getting treatment on his eye. “Jalen returned to action and played well and had great energy,” he said.
The Cavaliers shot well from beyond the arc hitting 12-of-26, but we were up by only eight points (35-27) at the half.
Friday night’s 94-23 win over Ridge Christian saw St. John’s record six players scoring in double figures, including Britt Pipkin and Joe Denton, who both came off the bench to toss in 13 points each.
Hurta canned 20 points to lead the Cavaliers, Gamble added 11 points and Lewis and Ward had 10 each as the starters all played less than two quarters.
Tipoff of the SCISA Region 1A against Faith Christian was set for 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral Academy.
