Lady Foxes put up fight against AAAA power Goose Creek

The Ashley Ridge girls’ basketball team made the short trek over to Goose Creek to tangle with the perennial power Lady Gators on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs.
And the Lady Swamp Foxes put up a fight, only falling 35-24. The Lady Gators ended the game on a 14-5 run to avoid the upset bid.
“We knew we had to control the tempo and play great defense, and keep it as low scoring as possible,” said Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw, whose team ends the season 11-10. “…We just wanted to give ourselves a chance.”
It was the final game for two seniors, including starting point guard Olivia Baum. The other senior was reserve guard Kim Cole.
“We’re going to use this as a learning experience,” Shaw said. “We need to get better this summer and continue to build on the chemistry, and really just get after it.”
Junior guard Shelby Daly headlines the group set to return. She averaged 12 points, four assists and three steals a game.
“That’s to go along with a 4.0 GPA in the classroom,” Shaw said. “She’s an unbelievable leader for our team.”
Shaw’s team will also bring back post players Ashley Tierney and Ariel Glover. Sixth man Kelly Cousins will be back too.
“You’ve got to give them a lot of credit for what they do with such a young team,” GCHS coach Tim Baldwin said. “They played hard. They had a little bit of success early and then we were in a dogfight.”
The Lady Gators advanced to the second round and will travel to defending champion Dutch Fork on Friday.
