John Jenkins scored a game-high 32 points Saturday but he didn’t sink the shot he wanted the most.
Summerville lost 54-52 to Ridge View in the second round of the Class AAAA boys’ basketball playoffs. The Green Wave (20-6) was eliminated with the loss while the Blazers (15-10) advance to face Goose Creek in the third round Tuesday.
The game was tight throughout and the teams entered the fourth period in a 46-46 tie. Ridgeview broke a 52-all tie with two free throws by Jordan Portee with 35 seconds remaining.
From there Summerville got off three shots, but none hit their mark. Jenkins, who surpassed his career-high scoring mark for the second time in a three-day period, took a 3-pointer just before the buzzer but after bouncing off the backboard the ball rolled off the rim.
“We had our chances,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “If we would have made one or two of those shots then we would be celebrating. It’s heartbreaking to lose like that. They just made the big baskets tonight and we didn’t. I’m disappointed that we didn’t win, but I’m not going to let it diminish what we did this year. We made a great run. For us to not be ranked going into the season and move up to the No. 7 spot in the polls is a great accomplishment for our kids.”
Senior Brandon Wilkerson scored 14 points in his final game at the Green Wave gym. Portee led Ridge View with 14 points while Trevon Howell added 10 for the Blazers.
Turnovers were costly for Summerville in the first period as Ridge View pulled out to a 6-point lead. Then Jenkins caught fire, scoring 15 points in the second period to finish the half with 27 points and give Summerville a 37-34 lead.
But Portee opened the third period with consecutive 3s to spark a 9-0 Ridge View run. Jenkins pulled the Wave within 2 with 50 seconds remaining in the period with his fourth bucket from behind the arc. Then point guard Timmy Singleton made a steal and layup on the ensuing break for the 46-all score.
The game marked the final time that four players will suit up for the Green Wave.
“We lose four seniors: Brandon Wilkerson, Chris McKinnon, Kelvon Bellinger and Isaiah Kinlock,” Elliott said. “Their legacy is two of them have three region titles and two of them have two region titles. They left the program in better shape than it was when they came here.”
Despite the losses, Elliott is optimistic about the future.
“John had a phenomenal year and is only a junior,” he said. “We will have our leading scorer back, our third leading scorer back and our point guard back. I think we will be in pretty good shape next year. We have some JV guys who we will need to step up and adjust to the intensity of varsity basketball but we have the summer to get them acclimated.”
