Lady Gators end season with 20 wins

Goose Creek girls basketball coach Tim Baldwin knew it was going to take an extraordinary effort to knock off defending champion Dutch Fork.
While the effort was good, it wasn’t good enough to take down the Lady Silver Foxes in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs on Friday night.
“We knew we had to play to a high level to have a chance,” Baldwin said. “I thought the effort was at a high level but when you play as good a team as they are skill-wise, you’ve got to be able to score with them. We held them to a pretty decent score but we didn’t shoot well enough or finish around the basket … we just lost to a better team.”
Baldwin’s team finishes the season with a 20-5 record. The Lady Gators won one playoff game, defeating Ashley Ridge 35-24 on Feb. 12.
The Lady Gators lose four seniors, including their top two scorers Ashley Fields and Jalvin Jones. Fields, a High Point signee, averaged 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds while Jones scored 8.2 points a game. Other seniors were Sahara Pringle (4.9 ppg) and Chiquita Rivers (3.7 ppg).
They won’t return an elite player like in years past, but the group set to come back is a large one.
“We dressed 15 (on Friday night) and 11 of them will come back,” Baldwin said. “We’re going to miss the seniors we have … we’ll be solid again next year. We’ve just got to get the young players some experience.”
Junior guard Alex Ludwig and junior Stanford Pringle averaged 6.9 and 6.0 points respectively. Junior forward Shakeia Joy averaged 4.8 points and was second in rebounding at 4.1 boards a contest. Frasier was third with 3.2 rebounds a game.
