A total of 28 wrestlers from the area will compete for South Carolina High School League state championships this upcoming weekend in the Upstate.
The state individual wrestling tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the Anderson Civic Center.
The top four seeds from the Lower State qualifiers this past weekend advanced to meet the top four Upper State qualifiers. Three consecutive wins are all that stands between a qualifier and a state championship.
Of the contingent making the trip across state, eight grapplers are the top Lower State seeds.
Summerville has three Lower State No. 1s in Class AAAA (James Sass, 106; Gavin Perkins, 126; Chad Wood, 152). Stratford has a pair of top seeds (Nick Young, 132; T.J. Deveaux, 170). Cane Bay’s Matt Rudy (182) is the No. 1 seed from the Lower State in his class.
In Class AAA, Haven Horlback (138) and Dennis Flores (170) are No. 1 seeds.
Flores is the lone wrestler defending a state championship. He was the Class AA champion at 152 pounds in 2012 and the 145-pound champ in 2011.
Six of the 28 grapplers are No. 2 seeds. The other 14 qualifiers are third or fourth seeds.
