Wrestlers qualify for state tournament

Nearly a dozen Summerville-area wrestlers will compete for state titles this weekend.
The Green Wave wrestling team qualified five grapplers for the state individual wrestling championships to be held at the Anderson Civic Center Feb. 22-23. The top four wrestlers in each weight class from both the Lowerstate tournament and Upperstate tournament advance to the South Carolina High School League championship tournament.
Three Summerville wrestlers advanced by winning a Lowerstate championship for their class Feb. 16. James Sass won the 106-pound class. Gavin Perkins won the 126-pound class. Chad Wood won the152-pound class.
Also qualifying for the Green Wave were Tyler Fachko, who placed fourth at 120, and Anthony Collins, who placed third at 160.
“We were hoping to get a couple more through but Lowerstate wrestling is tough,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “All the guys we thought would do well wrestled well but when you get to the state qualifying level everyone is good and goes hard.”
Fort Dorchester qualified three wrestlers while both Ashley Ridge and Cane Bay qualified two.
Fort Dorchester's AJ Alford placed second at 145. Also qualifying for the Patriots were Tyre Wright (3rd at 113) and Jacob Hutchinson (4th at 170).
Qualifying for Ashley Ridge were Zach Armstrong (3rd at 170) and Tyler Moore (4th at 195).
Cane Bay's Matt Rudy was the top wrestler at 182 and Albert Ednilao (3rd at 106) also qualified for the Cobras.
Wrestling for the state tournament begins at 5 p.m. Friday. The Class AAAA wrestlers are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, wrestling begins at 9 a.m. and runs until a champion is crowned in every weight class for all four divisions.
Tickets are $6 on Friday and $8 on Saturday, cash only.
