The Fort Dorchester Hockey Club clinched the 2012-13 regular-season championship Friday by earning a 6-3 victory over Wando.
The Patriots improved their record to 12-2 with the win in their season finale to edge out Greenville North in the standings. Greenville North finishes its schedule at 11-3 to claim runner-up honors. BE/PG United (10-2), Columbia (9-4) and Stratford (9-5) round out the Top 5 for the nine-team league. Summerville finishes the season at 1-12.
By finishing in first place in the standings, the Fort earns the top seed for the 2013 State Championship Tournament scheduled for next weekend at the Carolina Ice Palace. Play for the tournament opens at 6 p.m. March 1 and at 7 a.m. March 2. Admission is $6 per day.
The Patriots scored early in every period to keep the Warriors on their heels.
Only 34 seconds into the game, Blake Thompson scored an unassisted goal for the Fort. At the 10:47 mark of the period Zack Potter scored with assists from Nicholas Long Julian DiPaolo for a 2-0 Patriot lead.
Wando then got its offense going. Chris Hicks scored to cut the lead to 2-1 entering the second period.
Not even a minute into the period the teams faced off on the Warriors’ side of the ice. Justin LeBlanc received the puck with nothing between him and the goal except the Wando keeper and took advantage by putting a shot into the net. Brandon Doss received his first of two assists on the night on the play.
Roughly a minute later, Chandler Murphy scored for the Patriots. The Fort needed only 11 seconds to find the net again as Patrick McCardle sank a shot with 12:40 remaining in the period for a 5-1 Fort advantage.
Wando scored on shots by Zach Bauer and Jake Sparano and the teams entered the final period with the Fort ahead 5-3.
This time it took the Patriots more than three minutes to score. LeBlanc raced up the ice for a one-on-one with the keeper, made one fake and then sank a shot with 11:56 remaining to give the Fort all the cushion it needed.
Dylan Belida, Todd Braga, Tyson Duncan, McCardle and Murphy also received assists during the game.
Patriot goalkeeper Ean Hickam had 14 saves in the game.
