During a three-game winning streak, the Patriot baseball team picked up a big win over an old rival plus wins over a pair of new rivals of sorts.
On March 8, Fort Dorchester defeated Stratford 4-1 in Goose Creek. Sophomore Eurndraus Bryant crushed a pitch in the first inning for a home run that put Fort Dorchester up 2-0. Stratford cut the lead in half in the fourth, but the Patriots added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
“We made a couple of errors early in the game but we played pretty solid defense,” Patriot coach Jack Radcliffe said. “Ryan Boyle pitched his tail off and we started to swing the bats a little bit. Of course the homerun helped. That kind of sparked us.”
Boyle improved his pitching record to 1-1 with the win.
The next day the Fort picked up a one-sided win over Stall and on Tuesday the Patriots earned a one-sided win over Military Magnet. Stall is a Class AAA team and Military Magnet is a Class A team so the Fort hasn’t played them much in the recent past. Radcliffe added both teams to the schedule because both coaching staffs now have ties to Fort Dorchester. Ronnie Sayer heads up a Stall coaching staff that includes Jeremy Hackney, Justin Sayer and Charles Latirre while Michael Silver coaches for Military Magnet. All of them are former Fort Dorchester players.
With the wins, the Patriots improved their record to 4-3 if you include pre-season tournaments or 3-1 if you don’t. Goose Creek has defeated the Fort twice this year and the other loss was to Berkeley.
“We’ve had good pitching and defense this season and these last three games we have hit the ball well,” Radcliffe said.
Corey Rawlings, Joshua Murray and Ryan Thomas have the other pitching wins for the Fort.
Rawlings also leads the team in homeruns with three, including a grand slam he hit at Stall. Bryant has two homers on the year. Radcliffe said leadoff hitter Myles Snype, Cody Meree and Boyle are also hitting the ball well early this season.
The Patriots host a rematch with Stratford at 7 p.m. Friday. They open region play at Beaufort March 20 and then return home to host Ashley Ridge March 22.
