Swamp Foxes finally take down Warriors
On Monday the Ashley Ridge softball team did something it had never done before, defeat Wando.
The Swamp Foxes battled for a 2-1 victory over the Warriors at Ashley Ridge.
“I’m pleased with the maturity and mental toughness we showed tonight,” Swamp Fox coach Angi Brush said. “Wando is a good team with a good pitcher so we should be proud of this win.”
Swamp Fox pitcher Camryn Alverson only surrendered four hits while striking out four batters during a complete game in the circle. Ashley Ridge only allowed two other Wando base runners, one that was hit by a pitch and another who reached on an error.
Wando hurler Danica Newton also had a good outing. She fanned seven batters while walking only one. However, she surrendered five hits and Ashley Ridge put three runners on base due to fielding errors.
Wando jumped out to a fast start as center fielder Cadie Limbaker singled in the first inning and then scored when catcher Brooke Gibert put the ball in play.
The lead held until the bottom of the third. Annika Ponton got things started for the Swamp Foxes with a single and moved around the horn on a sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Atienza and a bunt single by Emily Hutt. Aubrey Rabun then reached on a fielder’s choice that plated Ponton and tied the game.
Kayla Bass then singled to load the bases. That brought Valerie Frank to the plate and she drove in Hutt for the 2-1 Ashley Ridge lead.
Wando put a runner on base in both the fifth and seventh inning, but failed to push either across.
Bass led the Swamp Fox batters, going 2 for 3 at the plate. She also reached on an error.
Limbaker also went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Wando batters.
