The Ashley Ridge girls' soccer team has a bit of restructuring to do but so far things seem to be coming together nicely.
The Lady Swamp Foxes are working to replace some players who had been with the team since its inception, but they do return 10 varsity lettermen and Ashley Ridge has been pretty sound early this year.
“So far we have developed some great team chemistry,” Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver said. “Each member of the team understands what they need to do in order for the ARHS program to develop into a championship caliber program. The team is very driven to succeed and that mindset starts with the returners and is being instilled in the new team members.”
Senior midfielder Marin McDonough, senior defender Carlie Blankenship and junior forward Sara Goodwin are the team's captains. The team only has one other senior, defender Roxanne Hopkins. All four of them, as well as midfielder Taylor Johnson and defender Caitlin Wilan, have been with the team since the 2011 season.
Others returning from last year's squad are midfielders Bo Erikson and Amelia Clower, defender Jaimy Farmer and forward Cassidy Govan.
The Foxes have two new goalkeepers, freshmen Allyson Manns and Molie Smith. They combined for shutouts in the last three games against Stratford, Goose Creek and Berkeley.
Megan Horton, Jade Erickson, Caitlyn Fecko and Madyson Reed are also new to the team.
“I have enjoyed watching this team play,” Weaver said. “They are good individual soccer players who all work hard. More importantly, they enjoy playing the game together and they push each other to do their best on the field and in the classroom. I look forward to seeing what this team can achieve.”
Ashley Ridge is off to a 3-2 start to the regular season as it dropped its first two contests to Top 10 teams Wando (3-0) and West Ashley (3-1).
On Thursday Ashley Ridge earned a 6-0 win over Stratford. The Foxes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half with goals from Clower, McDonough, Goodwin and Erikson. Then Goodwin added a pair of goals in the second half.
On March 26 the Foxes travel to Summerville. Ashley Ridge then has a pair of back-to-back home matches against Colleton County March 27 and James Island March 28.
