Green Wave softball team trounces Cougars

Roger Lee/Journal Scene -- Taylor Wuerfel picked up the pitching win for Summerville Wednesday.

The Green Wave softball team 10-runned Colleton County Wednesday to pick up its first region win of the season.
Summerville improved to 10-1 on the season with an 11-1 win over the Cougars.
Colleton jumped out to a 1-0 lead by pushing a run across in the first inning and that lead held until Summerville scored six runs in the bottom of the third. The Wave added five runs in the fourth and held the Cougars scoreless in the top of the fifth to enforce the 10-run mercy rule and end the game early.
Junior Taylor Powell led the Summerville batters, going 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brittany Olean was 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. She also reached base twice on walks.
Summer Jenkins got the start in the circle but had to leave the game after being injured. Taylor Wuerfel relieved her and only surrendered one walk and one hit in four-plus innings of work. Both came in Colleton’s final turn at bat.
“The team played a good solid softball game all around,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. “I was glad to see the defense step up. That is what we have been lacking in, solid consistent defense. Also, the team did a great job bouncing back after our loss to Stratford on Monday. It is tough to finish a game after a teammate suffers a serious injury, but the girls did a good job with that adversity and staying focused.”
She added that while Jenkins had some bruising from a line drive that hit her, she didn’t have any broken bones.
Third baseman Hannah Horton kicked off the Summerville rally in the third with a leadoff single. The Wave then loaded the bases with bunt singles by Olean and shortstop Sarah Windham.
Center fielder Taylor Powell singled to tie the game and Wuerfel got a base hit to drive in Windham. A Colleton outfielder had trouble fielding the ball on the play so Powell also scored for a 4-1 Wave advantage. Catcher Taylor Belfiore reached on an error and then first baseman Taylor Knight drove in two runs for a 6-1 Summerville lead.
The Colleton defense wasn’t sharp in the fourth and Summerville capitalized. Powell and Victoria Norris had RBI singles while Windham stole home, Powell scored on an error and courtesy runner Lauren Keefer was walked in.
Next up for the Wave are a pair of road games with Beaufort and Bluffton and then they return home to host Ashley Ridge March 27.
