New Ballet Company opens its doors in Summerville

A new venture, Summerville Civic Ballet (SCB), has taken root in Summerville.  Founded by Douglas Smoak, Artistic Director, this grass-roots ballet company is made up of local dancers ages 9 and up. Entrance to SCB is via audition; although fall auditions have already taken place, private auditions are welcomed and can be scheduled by contacting Douglas Smoak at (843)478-1811.
The company has announced its first performance on Oct. 20, 11 a.m., during Oktoberfest at St. Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church in Summerville.
Douglas Smoak studied with Robert Ivey Ballet in Charleston before attending the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He has danced professionally with Nevada Dance Theatre, Sarasota Ballet and Ballet Eddy Toussaint, and has extensive choreography and production experience.
The Summerville Civic Ballet also serves as the Community Coordinator for the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker, performed annually at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Local ballet students are given opportunities to perform alongside professional dancers in this professional production. Auditions are scheduled for Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Magnolia Dance Academy.
The Summerville Civic Ballet is currently housed at Magnolia Dance Academy, located at 2007 Old Trolley Road, Summerville. Magnolia offers professional and pre-professional dance classes which are open to company and non-company dancers.
