Journal Scene brings home SC Press honors

The three newspapers of Summerville Communications Inc. brought home 34 awards at Saturday’s South Carolina Press Association Annual Meeting in Greenville. The Summerville Journal Scene alone received 18 awards, including a second place win for General Excellence. The Journal Scene also won two awards in the All Weekly division for Sports Specialty Publication or Magazine (Football 2012) and for Sports Special Edition or Section (McKissick 600th Win) “The staff at The Journal Scene, and at all three of our publications, work as a team to get the job done. I put their work up against that of writers anywhere in the country. Their dedication is evident in the publications we produce each week,” said Executive Editor Judy Watts. “Our news staff continually amazes me with their dedication and talent,” said Publisher Ellen Priest. “Their commitment to this community shows in their work and I couldn’t be more proud to see them recognized.” Roger Lee received first place for his sports feature photo “First Pitch.” Lee also took third place for Sports Beat reporting. Government reporter Leslie Cantu took second place for her coverage of the 2012 election season. Stefan Rogenmoser was awarded first place for his Spot News Photo, “Bond Hearing,” And second place for his Feature Photo, “Charleston 9 Memorial.” Longtime Journal Scene columnist Julie Smith won third place for Humor Column writing. Writer Jim Tatum took four awards: both First place and Best of the Best awards for Humor Column writing, third place for Writing in Depth (Benton Murder Trial Under Way,” and third place Beat Reporting (Crime and Courts). Rob Gantt won first place for his Sports Page Design Portfolio. Gantt also won second place awards for his work at The Gazette: Sports Beat Reporting, Sports Page Design Portfolio, and his Sports Feature Story, “Healing in Hanahan.” Judy Watts won first place for Single Page Design for “Win #600,”second place for her Photo Series “Civil War Camp,” and third place for her Page One Design Portfolio. Regular Journal Scene photography contributor Shane Roper won second place for Sports Action Photo. The Berkeley Independent captured second place for General Excellence in the 2012 South Carolina Press Association Awards. It is the newspaper’s second top-two finish in the past three years. Production manager Linda Anderson took third place for her Sports Page Portfolio. Editor Frank Johnson took top headline writing awards for The Berkeley Independent in three categories: Feature Headline Writing, News Headline Writing and Sports Headline Writing. He also won first place for Spot News Reporting and second place for his Page One Design Portfolio for The Independent. The Gazette also brought home honors with Rogenmoser taking a first place award for “Two keys, one assault, three arrest,” and Johnson winning third place in Short Story for “Outlook good, not so good.”
