Tortoise wins

  • Thursday, March 28, 2013

M.J. Felder of Summerville met a new friend Tuesday. M.J. and his family stopped by the Kangaroo Station at Luden Drive and South Main Street to see Ben, the African Sulcata tortoise. Ben is one of seven owned by Randy Gallagher of Sunset Beach, who rescues these and other pet trade reptiles. Sulcatas are the third largest tortoise in the world and can grow to be well over 200 pounds. They can live for up to 150 years in the wild. Ben is 50 years old, according to Gallagher. Ben, a giant African Sulcata Tortoise, enjoys a gnosh of grass along South Main Street and Luden Drive. His owner, Randy Gallagher of Sunset Beach, N.C., had Ben and seven other Sulcatas out for an impromptu showing Tuesday afternoon. Gallagher runs a private rescue for Sulcatas and other such exotic animals from the pet trade, and frequently takes them on the road to show them off, educate the public, allow children up close and personal encounters, and receive donations to help feed and care for them.
