Senior Alihan Ozsoylu scored three Patriot goals Thursday to lead the Fort Dorchester boys’ soccer team to a 4-2 victory over cross-town rival Summerville.
“Alihan is a senior and I’ve asked him to change the way he plays this year,” Fort Dorchester coach Chris Jones said. “I know that was a little hard for him but he was willing to do it for the team so I’m glad tonight he got to sort of showcase some of the things that he does so well. Playing on this field we knew we would need to change our style of play and Alihan’s skills are well suited to the style we went with so it worked it out nice.”
Summerville was the first to get on the scoreboard as junior Ryan West sent a shot toward the goal that deflected off a Patriot defender and into the net for a 1-0 Green Wave lead in the opening minute of play.
Fort Dorchester midfielder Pablo Valenzuela tied things up with a hard grounder that rolled into the left corner of the goal halfway through the first half.
Each team had a few scoring opportunities over the next 15 minutes of play, but the tie wasn’t broken until Ozsoylu received a pass with approximately five minutes remaining in the half, drove up field and hit a shot from inside the box.
But Summerville answered in stoppage time. West sent the ball toward the goal with a sidekick and midfielder Davis Wiggins redirected the ball with his upper body for the Green Wave’s second goal.
In the 50th minute, Ozsoylu made another drive into the box and got tangled up with a Green Wave defender. He was awarded a penalty kick, which he made for a 3-2 Fort Dorchester lead.
Approximately two minutes later the Patriots sent a ball deep into Summerville territory. Wave keeper Ashton Tanner sprinted to the sideline and kicked the ball out of bounds before the Patriots could get to it.
But the Fort wasted no time inbounding the ball and Ozsoylu darted into the box. With the second last defender on his heels, he took a shot that found its mark for the 4-2 Patriot lead.
Summerville created some scoring opportunities in the final 25 minutes of play but the Fort defended them all.
The Patriots improved their record to 6-4-2 with a 4-1 mark in Region 8-AAAA while Summerville fell to 5-4-1 and 2-2. The Patriots are now tied with Beaufort for first place in the region.
“Summerville has some players injured so you have to take that into consideration but it is always tough to get a win against them on their own field,” Fort Dorchester coach Chris Jones said. “I’m proud of our guys because they fought hard all night. They wanted to come here tonight and send the message that we are after the region championship. Now they need to live up to the standard they set tonight for the rest of the season.”
The Fort returns to action on April 9 when it hosts a rematch with Beaufort, which defeated the Patriots 3-2 on March 15. The Eagles sole region loss is to Summerville.
The Green Wave also returns to action April 9 when it travels to Colleton County.
