Goodwin’s double lifts Green Wave over Patriots

Roger Lee/Journal Scene -- Summerville catcher Miles Goodwin helped the Green Wave baseball team earn a 7-6 win over Fort Dorchester Friday. --

The Patriot baseball team had rival Summerville on the ropes Friday but the Green Wave rallied in the final inning to earn a 7-6 win.
Fort Dorchester pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Patriot pitcher Ryan Boyle needed only three outs to add a complete-game victory over the Green Wave to his list of accomplishments for his senior year.
But Summerville scored five runs off a sole hit in the top of the seventh. Boyle walked two batters and hit another to load the bases. After a popup out, Johnston McCurry drove in Matty Powell with a linedrive out. TJ Hopkins walked to reload the bases and then catcher Miles Goodwin cleared them with a double for a 6-6 score.
“I had a pretty good idea it was a fast ball and he left it right in the middle so I got a good swing on it,” Goodwin said. “It felt pretty good.”
Boyle walked the next batter and his reliever reloaded the bases with another base on balls. A third consecutive base on balls pushed courtesy runner Chad Mathis across the plate for the 7-6 Summerville lead.
McCurry, who entered the game in relief in the sixth and got Summerville out of a jam, retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the pitching win. He faced four batters in his one-plus inning of work and struck out three. The other batter ground out.
“Boyle pitched a heck of a game,” Summerville coach Burt Bazzle said. “He had us off balance most of the game but I think he ran out of gas a little bit and Miles got a big hit. We just capitalized on a bad inning for them. Also, Johnston came in and really closed the door. What we do isn’t always pretty but these guys never quit and I’m proud of them for that.”
Summerville improved to 8-7, with a 5-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA with the win. Fort Dorchester dropped to 8-6, 2-3.
The Wave is playing in the Hanahan Invitational Tournament this week while the Patriots are playing in the Seahawk Invitational Tournament in Hilton Head.
