Two of the top Class AAAA teams in the state went head-to-head Tuesday in the 2013 Azalea Invitational Tournament championship game.
Boiling Springs, ranked fourth in the most recent South Carolina 4-A coaches poll, defeated seventh-ranked Blythewood 2-0 in the title game of the 23rd annual AIT.
The Bulldogs (19-1) scored an unearned run in the third inning against Blythewood (15-3) and pitcher Taylor Cabe cushioned the lead with an RBI-single in the sixth as Boiling Springs notched its fifth straight victory of the tournament. Blythewood finished the tournament with four wins against the sole loss.
Boiling Springs' only loss of the season came to third-ranked Byrnes and the Bulldogs avenged it by winning the rematch on March 27.
The only other team to go 3-0 in pool play at this year's AIT was Woodruff. Dorman was 2-1 in pool play, but edged out four other 2-1 teams (Colleton County, Clover, Beaufort and Summerville) on tiebreaker criteria to also play in the Gold (Championship) Bracket.
Beaufort won the Silver Bracket. Chapin won the Bronze Bracket and Blue Ridge won the White Bracket.
Summerville went 3-2 in the 16-team tournament with wins over Wade Hampton, Bay High out of Ohio and Colleton County and losses to Woodruff and Beaufort. Stratford finished at 2-3 while Goose Creek finished 0-5.
Cabe was named the Tournament MVP while teammates Camry Taylor, Bailie Maybry and Katie Jacoby also made the All-tournament team. Blythewood's Bailey Newman, Katie Chappell and Ansley Gilstrap, along with Dorman's Sam Thornton and Woodruff's Eliza Long, were also named to the All-tournament team.
