Coward-Hund will take over construction of Summerville’s newest fire station.
Town Council voted in a special meeting Tuesday to offer a $1,118,503 contract to Coward-Hund to finish the work started by Linden Construction.
Council also agreed to a $65,000 contingency for disputed work; this money could be paid to Linden, to Coward-Hund, or not paid at all.
The town and Linden signed a mutual termination agreement April 8 after nearly a month of a work stoppage.
Town officials wouldn’t comment on the reason for the termination. Town Attorney G.W. Parker said a non-disparagement clause in the agreement prevented him from discussing the matter in detail.
Linden president Brandon Linden couldn’t be reached for comment.
Linden Construction was the lowest bidder on Fire Station #5 at the intersection of Butternut Road and Central Avenue.
It was awarded a contract in the amount of $1.27 million, and the town celebrated its first station in the Knightsville area with a groundbreaking in November.
With Linden out of the picture, the town has now turned to the next-lowest bidder, Coward-Hund, which bid $1.34 million.
Parker said the town won’t know the final cost of the station until Coward-Hund gets on site and evaluates the work done to date, but it’s “pretty much on track with what it would have cost had Coward-Hund been given the bid to begin with.”
Completion of the station will be delayed two to three weeks, to sometime in August.
The town is paying for the station with a combination of fire impact fees and hospitality taxes.
