Swamp Fox baseball team surges down the stretch

The Ashley Ridge baseball team kept its winning streak alive with a pair of region wins early this week.
On Tuesday, the Swamp Foxes used a big arm and a big hit to claim a 3-2 victory over Beaufort.
Junior Bradley McLaughlin hit a three-run homerun in the first inning that was all the offense the Swamp Foxes needed. He finished 2 for 3 at the plate.
“He has been a spark for us,” Ashley Ridge coach BJ Bellush said. “We gave him his opportunity in the Hanahan tournament and he took advantage of it. He has two homeruns and two doubles in the last five games.”
James Govan provided much of the defense, pitching the first five and one-third innings and only surrendering one earned run.
“James is a senior who waited his turn and he has been outstanding on the mound for us this year,” Bellush said.
Carson Walls entered in relief and closed the game out.
On Wednesday, the Swamp Foxes (9-11, 5-4 in Region 8-AAAA) improved their winning streak to five with a 10-1 win over Colleton County (6-14, 3-7).
Sophomore John Sanchez earned the pitching win, his third of the season.
Ashley Ridge tallied 15 hits in the game. Jason Miller and Hunter Grover were 3 for 4 at the plate and Aaron Miller was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Ashley Ridge scored two runs in the fourth inning, four in the fifth and four in the seventh while holding the Cougars to a sole run in the fourth.
The Swamp Foxes close their regular season on Monday when they host West Ashley.
