Softball Controversy

  • Thursday, April 18, 2013

Senior Jessyca Calhoun smashed a walk-off home run Wednesday to apparently lift the Patriots to a 7-5 victory over Summerville. However, Summerville coach Heather Tucker protested a call in the first inning of that game and Thursday morning the South Carolina High School League upheld her protest. On Monday or Tuesday of next week, the teams will replay the game from the point in the first inning when the protest was made on the field. Summerville has been awarded a run that was originally nullified by a dead-ball call and will have a runner on third base. Fort Dorchester (6-13) won the first game of this year’s series with Summerville (17-6). In addition to negating Calhoun’s homer, the protest nullifies a pitching win for Mackenzie Broughton and a 4 for 4 performance at the plate with a homer by Fort Dorchester’s Kaitlyn Kerley.
