The Green Wave baseball team clinched the Region 8-AAAA championship outright Wednesday with an 8-1 win over rival Fort Dorchester.
“Our pitcher threw a no hitter and we had a few guys get on base a couple of times,” Summerville coach Burt Bazzle said. “It was a great team effort.”
Junior Zach Mosay surrendered no hits and only one walk while striking out eight Patriot batters in seven innings. The Patriots only had three other base runners, two that reached on errors and another that reached on a fielder's choice.
Summerville had already captured the top playoff seed but the win over the Patriots eliminated any chances of a tie for the region crown. The Wave (16-6, 8-0) will open the playoffs April 25 by hosting the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAAA. Fort Dorchester (10-6, 4-6) will also make the playoffs and likely face the top seed from Region 7-AAAA.
Shortstop Devonte Base and outfielder Craig Lilenthal were both 2 for 3 at the plate. TJ Hopkins and Michael Powell were both 2 for 4.
Hopkins, Mosay and Base all drove in two RBIs and Hopkins scored two runs and reached base in all four of his turns at bat.
Second baseman Johnston McCurry made a couple of spectacular plays from behind the bag to help secure Mosay's no hitter.
Summerville scored a run in the first inning, two in the second, one in both the third and fourth and then three off three hits and two base on balls in the sixth.
The Patriot run came in the top of the seventh. Charlie Cooper reached on an error, advanced to second on a bad throw and scored on a ground out by Cody Meree.
Summerville faced Ashley Ridge after press time yesterday and wraps up its regular-season schedule with a game in Bluffton Friday. Fort Dorchester closes its schedule by hosting Military Magnet at noon Saturday.
