The contribution the 1,000-plus Dorchester Two classified employees make to the education of local children often goes unsung and even overlooked but on April 16 district officials treated 28 of those employees like the stars they are.
A large crowd of school officials, colleagues, friends, and family members gathered at Summerville High School to honor this year’s District Two Star Performers. All schools and district job sites selected a 2013 Star Performer of the Year from among their classified staff.
“We have a team concept in this district,” Superintendent Joe Pye told the crowd. “From the members of the board to every other position … all of us contribute to the children’s well being and that is what it takes. You have been doing wonderful work for so long and today your peers and your colleagues want everyone to know how good you are.”
The program was created to showcase the outstanding caliber of classified employees who make important contributions to the smooth day-to-day operation of schools and the district.
A wide range of classified employees are eligible for the award including secretaries, custodial staff, nurses, lunchroom workers, technology support, teaching assistants and maintenance personnel.  Representatives from all district schools as well as the district’s maintenance department, special services, extended day program, food services, technology department and district support staff are selected by co-workers for the honor.
Pye thanked the honorees not only for the tasks they complete each week, but also for the way they represent the district.
“Each of you is a giver,” he said. “You have been giving your whole life but it is really just a beginning because you are passing that baton on to other workers, to our children, to your families and friends. You are role models who show them it is important to do life’s work everyway we can and the best way we can. You don’t grumble or complain about it. You do it with a healthy mind and a good attitude because when you do, positive things happen.”
During the 12th annual Star Performer Celebration, each honoree received an award while Public Relations Officer Pat Raynor read a tribute detailing the reasons their co-workers view them as a Star Performer.
The awards presentation was preceded by a slide show featuring candid shots of the 28 Star Performers and was followed by a reception in their honor.
