Three members of the class of 2013 at the Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) were awarded National Achievement Scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Approximately 800 outstanding Black American high school seniors were awarded Achievement Scholarship® awards through the National Achievement Scholarship Program.
GSSM's National Achievement winners are Taylor Banks, daughter of Monica Love of Orangeburg; Menshian Ashaki George, son of Emily and Anthony L. Kelly of Ridgeville; and Toby Holden, son of Karen and Corey Holden of Simpsonville.
"To receive a National Achievement Scholarship is quite an honor," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. "We're very proud of our students and thrilled for their families. This scholarship is based on their abilities, skills and achievements, which makes it even more impressive."
The National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by NMSC, is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants.
The program begins with students taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). Semifinalists across the nation are then named based on the highest-scoring entrants in each state. A student becomes a finalist based on academic record, high school principal endorsement and an SAT score confirming their qualifying test score.
Approximately 80 percent of semifinalists are predicted to become finalists and more than half of the finalists receive an Achievement Scholarship award. Learn more about this award at http://www.nationalmerit.org/nasp.php
