It took them three days, but the Lady Swamp Foxes earned a 4-0 win over Summerville.
The crosstown rivals met in The Swamp Friday and the game moved slowly under overcast conditions. Ashley Ridge got a goal from Sara Goodwin to go up 1-0 and that lead held until the bottom fell out of the sky with 48 seconds remaining in the first half causing the rest of the game to be postponed.
Play resumed on Monday and after an uneventful 48 seconds and a short halftime break, Ashley Ridge picked up the pace and limited Summerville's scoring opportunities in the second half.
“If we play like we did in the second half tonight the rest of the season we should be fine,” Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver said. “Right now we are playing with composure and confidence so if we keep it up we should be fun to watch and we should have some success.”
The win left the Swamp Foxes (10-3, 7-0 in Region 8-AAAA) needing only one win in its final three region games to clinch the region championship and the top playoff seeding that accompanies the title. Summerville (4-8, 1-6) was left with its back against the wall, but not mathematically out of playoff contention.
Ashley Ridge was awarded a corner kick seven minutes into the second half and took advantage to cushion its lead. Senior Marin McDonough sent the kick in and sophomore Jaimy Farmer headed it in for the score.
With just more than 18 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Madyson Reed won a ball in front of the net, slide right and landed a shot for a 3-0 Swamp Fox lead.
The final goal came with just less than nine minutes remaining. Sophomore Amelia Clower passed to McDonough and she hit the shot.
Allyson Manns had the shutout in goal.
Ashley Ridge faced Colleton County (10-4, 4-4) Tuesday after press time. The Swamp Foxes will close their region schedule by hosting Bluffton (2-13, 1-6) Friday and traveling to Fort Dorchester (7-6, 5-3) April 30.
Summerville took on Fort Dorchester after press time and will close its region schedule by hosting Beaufort (5-7, 4-3) April 30 and Bluffton May 3.
