A state champion from Summerville will help get the Coker College wrestling program up and running.
Summerville High School senior Gavin Perkins is part of the program’s first recruiting class, which is now up to 18 wrestlers who hail from seven states. Perkins was among the 10 original athletes to commit to the program that will hit the mat for its inaugural season during the 2013-14 academic year.
"I am extremely excited about this initial recruiting class," Coker coach Cy Wainwright said in a press release posted on the college’s website. "I, along with our staff and faculty, have worked extremely hard to show that Coker College is a great place to be. It is my intention to build a winning wrestling program here, and it begins with this class."
On Monday, Perkins was joined by his high school coaches and parents for a signing celebration at SHS.
“When I visited Coker I really liked the campus,” Perkins said. “Also I like the idea of helping build a program. It’s a great opportunity and I’m glad I get to be a part of it.”
During his senior season Perkins won an individual state championship in the 126-pound weight class and he was the runner-up in his weight class as a junior. He is also a two-time freestyle state champion, Greco-Roman state champion, All-region wrestler, Lowerstate champion and participated in this year’s North-South All-star event.
His unorthodox methods and work ethic are among the attributes that made him appealing to the Coker coaches.
“It looks like they want me in the 133 weight class or the 125 class so I’m going to need to gain some muscle because the guys in those classes are bigger than most of the competition I’m used to,” he said.
Perkins plans to major in political science and says he would like to pursue a Coast Guard career after college.
