Wave softball team avenges loss to Bobcats

File -- Sarah Windham had one of the key hits that pushed Summerville past Bluffton Thursday.

The Green Wave softball team knocked off the No. 8 Class AAAA team in the state Thursday.
Unranked Summerville avenged an early-season loss to Bluffton, handing the Bobcats a 6-2 loss. The Wave improved to 18-6 with a 6-3 standing in Region 8-AAAA, but was left trailing Bluffton (15-3, 7-3) in the race for the region crown by a game. Summerville faced Fort Dorchester Tuesday after press time hoping to grab a share of the region title and force a tiebreaker for the region’s top seed.
The rematch with Bluffton remained scoreless until Summerville rode a fourth-inning rally to a 6-0 lead.
“I’m proud of our kids for fighting tonight,” Wave coach Heather Tucker said. “This is a huge win and I’m hoping it will inspire our kids to take advantage of other opportunities this season.”
The first Summerville batter in the fourth didn’t reach but Dani Halajcsik followed with a single to kick off the rally. Taylor Belfiore walked and both runners moved over on a sacrifice bunt.
Hannah Horton received another walk to load the bases and Anna Gluhosky reached on an error to drive in Halajcsik. That brought Sarah Windham to the plate and she dropped a blooper into right field that plated Belfiore and Horton. Taylor Powell then doubled to push Gluhosky and Windham across, but was caught in a pickle while attempting to stretch her hit into a triple.
A Bluffton player made a bad throw to third and Powell came home on the error for a 6-0 Summerville lead.
Bluffton started its own rally with two outs in the seventh, but after the Bobcats scored a pair of runs Summerville made the out it needed to secure the victory.
The Wave will open the playoffs Thursday.
