Republican Mark Sanford, Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch and Green Party candidate Eugene Platt will appear on the ballot.
The first district has been solidly Republican for decades, but polls show the race between Sanford and Colbert Busch is close, as Sanford continues to be dogged by his personal life and the ethics charges he incurred as governor.
The seat opened up in a chain of events that unfolded late last year. Sen. Jim DeMint resigned his seat to work at the Heritage Foundation, and Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Scott to DeMint’s seat.
That triggered a special election for Scott’s seat, with seemingly every Republican in the Lowcountry vying for the chance to go to Washington.
Sanford and Curtis Bostic, a former Charleston County Councilman, made it to the runoff, which Sanford won with almost 57 percent of the vote.
Colbert Busch, meanwhile, was busy raising money.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters should remember to bring a photo ID.

Special election Tuesday

  • Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Voters in the First Congressional District go to the polls Tuesday to choose their representative to serve out the remainder of former Rep. Tim Scott’s term.
Republican Mark Sanford, Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch and Green Party candidate Eugene Platt will appear on the ballot.
