Ashley Ridge put up a good fight but in the end Beaufort had too much depth for the Swamp Foxes as well as all the other teams at the 2013 Region 8-AAAA boys’ track and field championship meet.
Beaufort tallied 140.6 points at Summerville High School Thursday to claim the region title. Ashley Ridge wasn’t that far behind, placing second with 115.6 points. Trailing were Fort Dorchester (96), Summerville (91.2), Colleton County (41) and Bluffton (39.6).
Several Dorchester Two athletes did win events to claim individual region championships and several more placed in the Top 4 to also advance to the Class AAAA state-qualifying meet to be held May 4 at Spring Valley High School.
“The important thing this time of year is advancing athletes in as many events as you can,” Summerville coach Joe Call said. “If all the boys we are sending to the state qualifier place in the Top 8 to advance then we could have a strong showing at the state meet.”
With Sean White leading the way, Ashley Ridge was particularly strong in the field events.
White won the Long Jump with a 21-03.75 mark. He also placed second in the High Jump with a 6-00.00 mark that was just behind teammate Geraldo Johnson’s 6-02.00 region championship mark and placed second in the Triple Jump with a 42-09.75 mark.
Shamon Thomas won the Shot Put with a 46-11.00 mark and Malik Graham placed second in the Discus.
Jackson Ellenburg led the Swamp Foxes in the track events, wining the 3200 with a 10:05.95 time and placing third in the 1600 with a 4:40.00 time.
Devon Duncan (second in the 800) and Dashaun Santiago (second in the 400) will also advance to the state-qualifying meet.
Kenny Fenton-Griffith was a standout for the Patriots. He won the 100 with a 10.89 time and the 200 with a 21.90 time. Teammate Stephen Gillette won the 1600 with a 4:38.25 time.
