Swamp Foxes top Cobras in baseball playoffs

  • Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Ashley Ridge opened the Class AAAA baseball playoffs Thursday with a 5-3 win over Cane Bay.
The Swamp Foxes tallied 10 hits in the game while holding the Cobras to nine. Senior Kyle Hongsermeier was 2 for 5 at the plate with an RBI and junior Jason Miller was 2 for 4.
Ashley Ridge fell behind 2-1 early in the game, but then scored two runs in the fifth and two in the ninth to secure the win.
Sophomore John Sanchez got the win on the mound to improve his pitching record to 4-4.
On Saturday, Ashley Ridge held its own against the state’s top-ranked team. The Swamp Foxes (11-13) had five hits while Lexington (22-4) had six, but Ashley Ridge failed to push a run across and fell 2-0.
The Swamp Foxes were scheduled to host Lugoff-Elgin Tuesday after press time with a trip to the District 5 championship series on the line. The winner of that game will face Lexington and will need to beat the Wildcats twice in order to advance to the Lower State round of the playoffs.
