Ethel Vernelle "Nelle" Hammond Stein

God touched her and she slept.
Ethel Vernelle “Nelle” Hammond Stein, 91, of Camden, wife of the late Jack R. Stein, passed away Sunday morning, May 5, 2013 following a brief illness.
Nelle was born in Stoneboro, S.C., the daughter of Carl Vernon and Susie Stover Hammond.
She is survived by three daughters and their families, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Her daughters are Judy Stein Watts (and her husband Pat) of Summerville, Jeannie Stein Hill of Rock Hill and Janice Stein Hayes (and her husband Jim) of Lake Wateree.
Her grandchildren are Sean Patrick Watts (and his wife Maya and their daughter – and Nelle's great granddaughter – Rook Altae Watts) of North Bend, Oregon; Paul Robert Watts of North Charleston, Kathryn Lee Hill of Charlotte, N.C. and John Alexander Hill of Rock Hill.
Nelle graduated from high school when she was in the 11th grade. She continued her education at Winthrop College in Rock Hill where she studied bookkeeping. Her professional career began at Thomas & Howard Company where she worked in the office, and met her future husband Jack Stein.
The couple made their home and raised their three daughters in Camden.
In addition to Nelle's excellent homemaking skills and her reputation as a great cook, she worked as a bookkeeper at the former Camden Hospital when it became a nursing home, Jaclyn Mills and as a bookkeeper for the late Judge and Speaker Pro-Tem Claytor Arrants.
Nelle was very active in her church, was an excellent bridge player and was always available to cook a meal for anyone in time of crisis.
The family would like to thank the staff of Morningside of Camden for the gentle, loving care they gave her during her final years. They would also like to thank all the friends and family who visited and called to brighten her days.
The family will receive visitors at Kornegay Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Kornegay Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
