Ashley Ridge defeated South Florence 11-0 in the opening round to improve its record to 14-3. South Florence (5-13) was eliminated with the loss while the Swamp Foxes advance to host South Aiken, a winner over Irmo, Wednesday in the second round.
“Most of the teams making it to the second round have an eye to the state championship game,” Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver said. “Nearly all of them have a team that can make a push that way so fans should be treated to a really good game on Wednesday.”
The Swamp Foxes made a clean sweep of its Region 8-AAAA opponents this season to claim the region’s top seed. That momentum carried into the playoffs and Ashley Ridge took control early against South Florence.
The Swamp Foxes had first-half goals from Marin McDonough, Sara Goodwin, Madyson Reed, Cassidy Govan, Carlie Blankenship and Taylor Johnson to go up 6-0. In the second half Reed, Goodwin, Amelia Clower, Caitlin Wilan and McDonough scored.
Mollie Smith and Allyson Manns shared the shutout in goal.
“We came out focused this evening and if we do that and play simple soccer then we should be competitive,” Weaver said. “I think tonight we showed that if we put the ball on the floor and play simple soccer we are ready to go.”
In Ashley Ridge’s short history, the Lady Swamp Foxes advanced to the second round of the state playoffs one other time when they were in the AA classification but they have never made it to the third round.
Lady Patriots
The Fort Dorchester girls opened the playoffs Monday at West Ashley. The Lady Patriots (7-10) put up a good fight, but fell 2-1 to West Ashley (13-6). Caitlyn Reilly had the Fort Dorchester goal.
The Patriots are the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AAAA while West Ashley is the No. 2 seed from Region 7-AAAA. Wando (15-1) won the Region 7-AAAA title and is ranked second for Class 4-A.
South Aiken (18-2) is the No. 5 ranked 4-A team in the state while West Ashley is ranked 13th and Ashley Ridge 15th.
