An Eagle Nest Elementary School fourth grade student was suspended April 23 pending a formal hearing for bringing two toy guns to school, said Dorchester District Two spokesperson Pat Raynor. Suspension is automatic.
The guns were plastic toy Airsoft Guns that the student had in his book bag. While in the bathroom one was discharged but the student stated it was an accident. There was no danger to other students. These types of toy guns fire plastic-type projectiles.
Possession of such toys in school is a violation of school and district policy. The realistic looking Airsoft guns are “look-alikes” of real weapons.
The incident was brought before the district hearing officer and appropriate disciplinary action was taken. Confidentiality laws prohibit the district from releasing what those actions were, said Raynor.
The district is asking that parents speak with their children about bringing inappropriate toys or items to school that could result in disciplinary action.
Under the South Carolina Safe Schools Act, the incident was reported to the North Charleston Police.
According to the police report, this is not the first time this student has brought these guns to school. Allegedly, according to a parental statement in the police report, the child had brought the guns to a previous school and had faced the same disciplinary action. The parent claimed no knowledge that the guns were still in the student’s possession.
According to the incident report the child was placed under custodial arrest with the parent signing a custodial promise.
The weapons were placed into NCPD evidence.
