Tuesday’s playoff match between the Summerville and Stratford boys had all the makings of an upset but the Knights would have no part of that.
Stratford entered the first-round game with a better record, better seeding and home field advantage. But Summerville’s record is somewhat deceptive considering its region and the Green Wave had battled Stratford during a 3-2 loss only a week before.
Adding to the hopes of Summerville fans that the Wave would avenge the earlier loss is the fact that many of the athletes from the two teams grew up playing at the same soccer club and some even play on the same travel team so it wasn’t like the Wave didn’t know what it was up against.
The set up was right, but on the field the Knights (15-6) took charge immediately and never lost momentum as they earned a 5-0 shutout to eliminate Summerville (9-9-1).
Stratford junior Tristan Ray provided much of the firepower. In the fifth minute Ray drilled a shot from just outside of the penalty box that landed in the top right-hand corner of the goal. In the 17th minute, Wave keeper Ashton Tanner blocked a shot by Ray, but the forward was there for the rebound. With the keeper out of position, Ray sent a second shot past the sole Green Wave defender in his way for a 2-0 Stratford lead.
Roughly three minutes later, Ray passed to junior Reid Short who then scored. The Knights needed only two more minutes to add a goal by Johnnie Lynch to take a 4-0 lead with 19 minutes remaining in the first half.
Summerville fended off all other Stratford attacks in the half and did create some scoring opportunities of its own in the opening 40 minutes. Chris Miller had a shot sail just wide. David Kennedy sent a hard grounder toward the net but a Stratford defender managed to lunge at it and redirect it with his foot. The Wave also had multiple corner kicks and a shallow free kick from directly in front of the goal but Knights’ keeper Justin Overstreet had an outstanding evening.
Ray completed a hat trick by hitting the only goal of the second half. Meanwhile Overstreet continued to thwart all Summerville attacks to earn the shutout in goal.
