Bring a blanket, lawn chair, picnic basket and enjoy a beautiful musical evening as the Arts Business Civic Coalition presents a free concert, “Jazz Concert Under the Stars” on May 18, from 6-8 p.m. in Azalea Park.
The concert will be performed by the Tommy Gill Quartet, featuring Robert Williams on saxophone. Tommy Gill is a jazz piano legend, having performed in every major concert hall in Charleston in addition to playing regularly at The Mezz Jazz Room and the Charleston Grill. Robert Williams is a saxophonist specializing in smooth jazz with excursions into heavy blues, swing, pop, and funk influences. Jake Holwegner will join in on bass and Dave Patterson on drums. Each musician brings his own style and blend for a harmonic evening of jazz.
The Arts Business Civic Coalition is working in conjunction with Sculpture in the South by cross-promoting both the jazz concert and the show and sale. Attendees how arrive between 5-6 p.m. are invited to stroll through the Sculpture in the South Show and Sale at no charge.
“This is a great opportunity to be immersed in outstanding original artworks as well as to chat with the artists,” said Susan Frampton, executive director of Sculpture in the South.
In addition, a basket of goodies containing items local to Summerville will be raffled off. Sign in on arrival to have a chance at winning the basket before the end of the evening. The basket contains two bottles of Azalea Olive Oil, a certificate for two tickets to see “Chicago” at the Flowertown Players, two bottles of wine from Accent on Wine, coffee from Coastal Coffee Roasters, the 2012 DREAM ornament, a candle in "Summerville Rain" scent from Charleston Candle Works provided by Four Green Fields gallery, and more.
There is limited parking near the entrance to Sculpture in the South and the parking lot near the Cuthbert Community Center Hut will be reserved for handicapped parking until full. Parking is available in the Bethany United Methodist Church parking lot. Signs will direct attendees along the short walk to the concert.
In case of rain, the concert will relocate to the Flowertown Players theatre and it’s comfortable seating. Should the Jazz under the Stars become an indoor event, the picnic will be on hold; no food or drink can be brought into the theater.
The mission of the Arts Business Civic Coalition of Summerville-Dorchester County, Inc is to enrich the lives of the citizens of the greater Summerville area by providing a Civic Center to promote cultural, business and civic opportunities. The ABCC is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization.
The combined opportunity to enjoy fine Jazz and visit the Show and Sale makes this a one-of-a-kind event you won’t want to miss in the heart of Summerville at Azalea Park.
