Gammons Run for Your Mother attracts fast families

  • Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Two friends from Goose Creek were the top finishers for the seventh annual Hazel Williams Gammons Run for Your Mother 5K held in Summerville May 11.
Joseph Sanborn, 18, and Matthew Alford, 17, were the first runners across the finish line at the charity race. Both runners finished with a 20:22 time.
Benjamin Smoot was just behind, placing third overall with a 20:44 time.
This is the second consecutive year Sanborn has had the top time for the race. His brother, Nicholas, placed third in the 12 and under age division this year. Their father, Greg, placed eighth overall and second in his age group. Their mother, Stefanie, also had a Top 20 overall finish.
The event has become a favorite for families with multiple running enthusiasts.
Kaitlin Sojourner, a 14-year old who won the Overall Female division the prior three years, turned in another outstanding performance. Charlotte, N.C. runner Carmen Redfearn won the division this year with a 23:24 time but Sojourner claimed runner-up honors with a 24:06 finish. Charleston runner Ashley Burke came in with a 25:42 time to place third overall for the women.
Sojourner was joined at the race by her mother, brother and sister. Brother Walker placed first in the 12 and under division. Her sister, Julianna, recorded a 39:34 time in her first attempt at the Run for Your Mother course and mother Christina finished just behind.
Debra J. Gammons, Evelyn Gammons Blake, Beverly Gammons Bachelor, and Fredrick L. Gammons, the children of Hazel Williams Gammons, organized the run in memory of their mother who died at the age of 64 from a stroke.
“Our mom’s death shocked us; she was young,” Debra J. Gammons said. “My siblings and I organize this Run in her memory to encourage people to exercise and eat nutritious foods to prevent their having a stroke. We love seeing runners like Kaitlin and her siblings who have grown up with us.  We love seeing old friends and making new friends. With this Run our Mom’s life will not have been one lived in vain.”
The net proceeds from the event benefit the National Stroke Association.
