Chick Miler Invitational is this weekend
Summerville Country Club is hosting the 40th annual Chick Miler Invitational golf tournament this weekend.
The annual Memorial Day Weekend tournament has become a fan favorite over the years because it draws some of the area’s top amateur golfers from across multiple generations as well as less competitive golfers. Each round of the 54-hole, flighted, individual stroke-play event is followed by food and entertainment that add to the holiday atmosphere the tournament is also known for.
Miler Golf Pro Bray Blanton says this year’s tournament should be as competitive as ever.
“Participation is up,” Blanton said. “We have over 200 golfers registered compared to about 165 last year. There are some strong golfers in the field, including several past Chick Miler champions.”
Kamito Hirai, who finished with a 1-over-par score of 214 last year to win the tournament, has a conflict so he won’t be in town to defend his title. However, the field will include past champions Bill Smunk, Jess Cuthbert and Mike Cobb as well as Duke University golfer Austin Cody. Smunk holds the record for most Chick Miler championships, having won the event six times.
This week’s rain could make for some interesting scores.
“It was very dry this time last year so the course was firm and played fast,” Blanton said. “It should play a little softer this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the winner come in under par. If the rain stops it should be a lot of fun so let’s just hope the weather is good.”
The tournament teed off Friday morning and is expected to conclude Sunday with a late afternoon awards ceremony. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served after play Friday. Saturday night’s post-play festivities include a steak dinner and karaoke. Sunday’s activities include a cookout, evening fish fry and the awards ceremony.
